OLINeBooks and Summer Reading Circles!
It's that time again, time to pick out what you and your friends will select from OLIN'S stock to read and discuss during these long warm summer nights! You can have a group of ten or simply a group of four or five. The size really doesn't matter and we at OLIN will make it easy and affordable to do. Just because we love making things easy and affordable for you, our customers!
How's about we set the cost at ... zilch, zero, na da this year! That's right we won't charge you or your group anything for the e-book you select from our stock to read and discuss! Because we won't be charging a fee this year, we will only accept up to ten different reading groups(circles). An addittional caveat this year is that each leader of each reading circle will be responsible to write a collective review on what their group read and discussed. Nothing special or of any specific length, just a group opinion and some insight to what was liked or disliked, agreed or disagreed upon.
We need to have you form your group and select what to read by July 7 2008. That way you have the holiday to talk about the idea of forming a reading group as well as give you some time to pick out an e-book to read together as a group.
How we will handle all the small details is, that each group will have a leader and they will be in contact with us via e-mail. The leader will inform us of how many are in the group, the names of all members and what OLINeBook they want to read. It would also be nice to know what night of the week and at what time and so on, however the first is important and needed to receive the e-book to read. As we did last year, we will send just one special copyright suspended copy to the group leaders and they will be responsible for copying and forwarding a copy to all circle members. Then all that's left to do is to decide on a night and to make a big batch of sweetened ice tea! You and your group will also move through the e-book at your pace and without any deadlines to meet. Naturally, an average e-book is sixty to one-hundred and fifty pages, so it shouldn't take more than a couple of months or so at any reading speed. Then once the group is done reading and discussed out, the leader will write a short but detailed review, forward it on to us and then get the kids ready for the new school year!
That's it guys! We want you to have a good time with this so there are no rules or commitments to make! Now, because we will foot the bill for all the e-books being read by the circles, everyone can get involved and enjoy the long warm summer nights discussing an e-book on the veranda, with your friends/family and your favorite drink in hand. Get your group together, over the holiday or whenever and pick out something that everyone wants to read from our online e-Bookstore at the main site. Or you may simply click here to visit the newly re-formatted e-Bookstore.
Lastly we wanted to make just a couple of suggestions. These are only suggestions and if they don't seem worthy to you, don't pay any attention to them! We think that reading groups should be of a variety of family, friends and the new neighbors. Both old and young members, lends itself to very exciting and stimulating discussions. Another little treat is to have different people each week make their favorite summer time snack to share with the group. I'm sure you can figure out what's my most favorite part of 'Summer Reading Circle' get togethers!
Additionally, we have also found it very beneficial to, on the first gathering of your new reading circle, come up with a 'safety word or phrase'. The only specifics of the safety word or safety phrase, is that it has to be odd or unique and not said in normal conversation about an e-book. 'Scrambled eggs and mustard' was the dopey safety word used at the last circle I was at. The safety word or phrase should be agreed upon by all members. A safety word can be used by anyone of the group and/or anyone of the house you are meeting at. The safety word or phrase is only used when the discussion time gets too heated and the only results will be hurt feelings and anger. Once the saftey word has been used (said), by anyone, young and old it doesn't matter who, the discussion must end immediately and the group has to proceed and do the 'penalty' sit and talk about any other subject for at least fifteen minutes or so before ending and leaving for the night. The 'penalty' sit and talk, can be about anything, anything except the e-book or the discussion over it. Dicuss your kids, the coming school year or anything that comes to mind. After the 'penalty' of small talk for a bit everyone will then go home happy and not harboring any hurt feelings or anger. Remember, this is suppose to be a fun activity, so please do take care to see to it that everyone is respected and appreciated at your reading circle. Have fun and God bless you and yours! Enjoy and be safe over the coming holiday!
